Crownlands of Austria-Hungary 1804-1918

Note: The information listed on this page contains the Crownlands (Kronländer) that

constituted the Empire of Austria from 1804 and survived after the Austro-Hungarian

compromise of 1867. The Empire was divided into two unofficial geographic areas.

Cisleithania (German: Zisleithanien) the Habsburg lands west of the Leita river,

and Transleithania (Hungarian: Lajtántúl), the Lands of the Crown of Saint Stephen.

After the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1908 (administered since 1878)

from the Ottoman Empire, a third entity called the ‘Condominium‘ was established

that was administered by both Austria and Hungary but was part of neither.
