Note: Following the Barbarian invasions of Rome the commander Postumus established a
breakaway empire in the northwest of the Roman Empire. Though it included the provinces
of Britanica, Germania and Belgica and its capitals were Cologne and Trier, the core of
the empire was in Gallia or modern France. Later historians retrospectively refered to
the empire as Imperium Gallia (Gallic Empire), though it was not known by this name during
its existence. Rome had fully re-conquered the territory by 274 AD. From 457 to 487 a Roman
military commander and his son established a separate Roman state in northern Gaul. This
state survived the fall of Roman Empire before it was conqured by the Franks. The former
state later became the basis of the Frankish Kingdom of Neustria.

Note: Louis-Charles was Dauphin of France from 1789 to 1791 when the title was changed to simply
"Prince Royal de France" following the adoption of the new constitution. Though the monarchy
was abolished in 1792 and Louis XVI executed on 21 January 1793, royalists and foreign powers
recognised Louis-Charles as King Louis XVII. Louis XVII was never King of France and never ruled,
remaining a prisoner of the revolution, he most likely died of abuse and neglect at the hands
of the revolutionary authorities after the executions of the remaining royal household.
However, his death was never officially acknowledged by the Republic leading to many imposters
claiming his identity in later years. His uncle, Louis-Stanislas, duc de Anjou, who became King of France after the Bourbon restoration in 1814 styled himself Louis XVIII as an implicit acknowledgment of his nephew being the rightful King of France after Louis XVI had died.
Louis XVIII was recognised by Royalist counter revolutionaries during the wars of resistance
against the republic. He remained in exile from 1791, having succeeded in escaping to Germany
during the failed 'Flight to Varennes.' In exile he unilaterally proclaimed himself regent for his brother and then nephew rejecting the new revolutionary government, this proclamation was never recognised by Louis XVI and was acknowledged only by foreign powers and royalist exiles.
