Note: The western name "Korea" (or Corea), is derived from the ancient Korean Kingdom of

Goryeo or Koryo. In South Korea the entire Korean perninsular is reffered to as Hanguk,

"Country of the Han" or "Great Realm" (not related to the Han Chinese). In the North and in Chinese and Japanese, Korea is called Chosŏn, (Chinese) Chaoxian, (Japanese) Chosen, lit. "Land of the Morning Calm." During the later era of Yi dynasty the country was known as "the Hermit Kingdom" by both Korean and foreign sources for it's self-isolation, though in western sources the term "Hermit Kingdom" is not exclusively used in regard to Korea.
